چکیده
This paper derives upper and lower bounds for the -condition number of the stiffness matrix resulting from the finite element approximation of a linear, abstract model problem. Sharp estimates in terms of the meshsize h are obtained. The theoretical results are applied to finite element approximations of elliptic PDE’s in variational and in mixed form, and to first-order PDE’s approximated using the Galerkin–Least Squares technique or by means of a non-standard Galerkin technique in L(Ω). Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the theoretical results. Mathematics Subject Classification. 65F35, 65N30. Received: March 7, 2005. Revised: July 6, 2005.

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Bending of Straight Beams Using hp-Spectral Approximations
Displacement finite element models of various beam theories have been developed using traditional finite element interpolations (i.e., Hermite cubic or equi-spaced Lagrange functions). Various finite element models of beams differ from each other in the choice of the interpolation functions used for the transverse deflection w, total rotation φ and/or shear strain γxz, or in the integral form u...
متن کاملSignificant Error Propagation in the Finite Difference Solution of Non-Linear Magnetostatic Problems Utilizing Boundary Condition of the Third Kind
This paper poses two magnetostatic problems in cylindrical coordinates with different permeabilities for each region. In the first problem the boundary condition of the second kind is used while in the second one, the boundary condition of the third kind is utilized. These problems are solved using the finite element and finite difference methods. In second problem, the results of the finite di...
متن کاملElectromagnetic field analysis of novel low cogging force, linear switched reluctance motor, based on 2-D finite element method
This paper deals with electromagnetic design and 2-D (two-dimensional) magnetic field analysis of novel low force ripple linear switched reluctance (LSR) motor. The configuration that has been presented here has a higher number of rotor poles than stator poles, and the purpose of this configuration is to improve the force ripple, which is the weak point of LSRMs. In order to illustrate the ...
متن کاملAnalysis of High-order Approximations by Spectral Interpolation Applied to One- and Two-dimensional Finite Element Method
The implementation of high-order (spectral) approximations associated with FEM is an approach to overcome the difficulties encountered in the numerical analysis of complex problems. This paper proposes the use of the spectral finite element method, originally developed for computational fluid dynamics problems, to achieve improved solutions for these types of problems. Here, the interpolation n...
متن کاملBlock preconditioners for symmetric indefinite linear systems
This paper presents a systematic theoretical and numerical evaluation of three common block preconditioners in a Krylov subspace method for solving symmetric indefinite linear systems. The focus is on large-scale real world problems where block approximations are a practical necessity. The main illustration is the performance of the block diagonal, constrained, and lower triangular precondition...
